Graveyard, Monacahee, Co. Wexford

At Monacahee in County Wexford, a small graveyard occupies a space that the physical evidence refuses to confirm.

Associated with a church site set within a rath, the circular earthwork enclosure of the kind commonly raised in early medieval Ireland as a farmstead or place of local significance, the burial ground presents a quiet contradiction: no physical trace of interments has been found within the rath, yet a record from 1940 noted that the site had indeed been used for burial at some point in its history. The gap between what the ground holds and what was once observed is, in its way, the most interesting thing about the place.
