Graveyard, Naas, Co. Kildare

A graveyard that does not appear on over a century's worth of Ordnance Survey mapping is unusual enough, but what makes this burial ground beside St David's Church in Naas quietly remarkable is what turned up when a neighbouring property began digging in 1980. Lowering the ground level on an adjoining site, workers struck burials, medieval pottery, and a medieval floor tile roughly 35 metres to the north-east of the church, in a direction nobody had previously associated with the cemetery at all.

The graveyard itself eventually showed up on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map, surveyed around 1910, which marks a 'Grave Yd.' immediately to the south-east of St David's. Yet neither the first-edition six-inch OS map of 1838 nor the revision of 1938 to 1939 bothered to record it, an omission that speaks more to the practicalities of what surveyors chose to include than to the site's age. The 1980 discovery pushed the likely boundaries of the burial ground considerably further than the mapped footprint suggests. Medieval pottery and tiles of the kind found here are typically associated with ecclesiastical or high-status domestic contexts from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries, and their presence alongside human remains points to a graveyard with considerably more extent, and considerably more history, than the modest cartographic label implies.
