Graveyard, Raheen, Co. Limerick

The graveyard at Raheen, Co. Limerick, holds more dead than its walls suggest.

In 1997, archaeological testing in the field immediately to its north, carried out by Brian Hodkinson under licence No. 97E0012, uncovered four inhumations laid out on a east-west orientation across three of the six trial trenches opened. The burials extend to roughly ten metres beyond the current churchyard wall, and it is assumed that further remains lie undisturbed in the ground between those trenches. The graveyard's boundary, in other words, is a post-1700 convenience rather than the true limit of the site.

The enclosure itself is a roughly rectangular area of approximately 63 metres east-west by 50 metres north-south, bounded by a wall built after 1700 and entered through gates in both the west and east walls, with stiles at the north and south ends of the west wall. Within its north quadrant stand the poorly preserved ruins of a medieval church. Two mausoleums belonging to the Hunt family occupy the site, one in the northeast quadrant and a second built directly against the external face of the church's south wall, close to its southeast corner. The graveyard remains in active use, with memorials ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day. Fifty metres to the west-southwest stand Raheen Castle and its bawn, the bawn being a walled enclosure typically built to protect cattle and household buildings associated with a tower house, which gives some sense of the layered occupation of this elevated ground over several centuries.

The site sits on high ground with clear views towards Knockea Hill to the east and south, which makes the approach straightforward enough on a clear day. Access is via the entrance gates in the west and east walls. Those coming to look at the medieval church ruins should bear in mind that they are poorly preserved, and the more immediately legible features are the Hunt mausoleums and the older gravestones scattered across the enclosure. The field to the north, where the 1997 trenches were opened, gives no visible indication of what lies beneath it.
