Burial Grounds

Graveyard, Rochestown, Co. Limerick

Running along the inside of the southern wall of this quiet Limerick graveyard is a long, shallow depression in the earth, roughly five and three-quarter metres wide and dropping nearly a metre on its northern side.

It is an odd feature, neither explained by the ground's natural levelness nor obviously accounted for by any structure above it, and it sits there unremarked, running the length of the wall while the coarse grass grows over it. The graveyard itself is an unusual shape, too: not the rough square or rectangle you find in most rural Irish parishes, but a trapezoid, its four sides measuring quite differently from one another, the longest stretching to fifty-seven metres along the north.

The ruined church that occupies the centre of the enclosure is recorded under the site reference LI023-002001, and the whole complex sits on level pasture in County Limerick. The surrounding wall is built of mortared stone, a more substantial construction than the dry-stone boundaries common to many early Irish ecclesiastical enclosures, and the entrance gate on the eastern end of the southern wall is wrought iron, flanked by a pair of limestone piers. The earliest legible headstone noted during survey was dated 1826, which places the visible commemorative record firmly in the nineteenth century, though the ruins themselves suggest a much longer history of use on the site. The survey data was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in October 2013.

The graveyard remains in occasional use for burial, so visiting with some sensitivity to that fact is worthwhile. The site sits within farmland, and the interior, covered in coarse grass, requires careful footing. The depression along the southern wall is easy to miss at first, but once noticed it draws the eye back repeatedly. It is worth walking the full inner perimeter to appreciate just how irregular the enclosure is, and to look closely at the junction between the wall and the ground where that unexplained hollow runs deepest, on the northern side, to just over a metre below the surrounding surface.
