Graveyard, Templerainy, Co. Wicklow

At Templerainy in County Wicklow, the ruins of a nave and chancel church sit so thickly overgrown that the structure has almost been reclaimed by the landscape entirely.

What makes the site quietly anomalous is the evidence written into the stonework itself: the chancel, measuring roughly 15.9 metres by 6.9 metres with walls about a metre thick, is built from large cut blocks and features antae, which are projecting side walls that extend beyond the gable ends, a hallmark of early Irish ecclesiastical architecture and a reliable indicator of considerable age. The nave beside it tells a different story, built wider and from noticeably smaller stones, suggesting the two sections belong to different phases of construction separated by some stretch of time.

The church sits towards the northern end of a graveyard that preserves its own quiet antiquity. Mapped as a subrectangular enclosure on the 1907 Ordnance Survey six-inch sheet, the burial ground measures roughly 40 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, defined by an earth and stone bank with an external fosse, a shallow ditch, along its northern edge. Such enclosures are a familiar feature of early medieval ecclesiastical sites in Ireland, often marking the original sacred boundary of a monastic or parish foundation. Despite the graveyard's evident long use, only a single seventeenth-century headstone now survives in situ. The Ordnance Survey Name Books, compiled during the great nineteenth-century mapping surveys of Ireland, noted several headstones from both the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, meaning a number have been lost or displaced in the intervening period, lending the surviving stone a rather solitary significance.
