Habitation site, Kilmartin, Co. Wicklow

A field in Kilmartin, County Wicklow, turned out to conceal considerably more than expected when groundwork for a development triggered a full archaeological excavation.

What came to light was not a single dramatic monument but the accumulated material of sustained human activity, the kind of quiet, dense evidence that speaks to a place being worked and lived in over a long period rather than visited briefly or ceremonially.

The excavation, carried out under licence 01E1072, uncovered a pattern of features characteristic of settled prehistoric occupation: pits dug into the ground for storage or processing, post holes marking where timber structures once stood, and distinct areas of burning suggesting hearths or small-scale industrial activity. Alongside these features, prehistoric flint and pottery were recovered in large quantities. The volume and variety of the material led the excavator to interpret the site not simply as a domestic dwelling place but as somewhere where manufacturing or industrial work was also taking place. Flint working, for instance, requires sustained effort and skill, and the presence of significant quantities of worked stone alongside pottery points to a community engaged in producing, not merely consuming. All of the exposed features were fully excavated before development proceeded, a condition standard in Irish planning archaeology, ensuring the record was as complete as possible even as the physical remains were removed.
