Hearth, Cill Mhuirbhigh, Co. Galway

Within the inner enclosure of Dún Aonghasa, the great clifftop fort on Inis Mór in the Aran Islands, excavations uncovered something easy to overlook amid the massive drystone ramparts: the faint circular smear of a domestic hearth, roughly half a metre across, its soil still dark with charcoal after three thousand years.

It is a reminder that this celebrated prehistoric monument was not merely a defensive structure but a place where people ate, cooked, and went about the ordinary business of life.

The hearth, along with three others found nearby, came to light during research excavations in the western half of the inner enclosure. This particular example was defined by charcoal-flecked soil and bounded on its eastern side by a single flat slab. Recovered from within and around it were small fragments of burnt bone, pieces of scallop shell, and a single charred cereal grain that could not be identified to species. To the east, a scatter of stones may represent the remnant of a roughly cobbled surface; to the northeast, a thin spread of limpet shell suggests food was being processed or consumed close by. A second hearth was found 3.4 metres to the northeast, and two further hearths lay to the south of an associated pit. All four features date to the Late Bronze Age, a period running roughly from 1200 to 600 BC, when communities across Ireland were producing sophisticated metalwork and living in increasingly organised settlements. The finds at Dún Aonghasa place ordinary domestic activity, cereal preparation, shellfish gathering, the tending of a small fire, squarely within one of the most imposing stone enclosures in Atlantic Europe.
