Holed stone, An Baile Íochtarach, Co. Kerry

At Kildrum graveyard on the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula, one small slab of undressed sandstone carries a detail easy to miss: a neat hourglass-shaped perforation, just 25mm across, bored clean through its centre.

This is one of three holed stones recorded within the burial ground, a type of object found at early medieval Irish ecclesiastical sites whose precise purpose remains a matter of quiet debate among archaeologists. The perforation here is carefully placed, centrally disposed within a stone that is roughly gable-shaped and relatively thin, measuring 0.46 by 0.41 by 0.045 metres. What makes this particular example more interesting still is a small circular notch cut into the top of the slab, trimmed roughly at its edges, which may represent either a deliberate secondary feature or an earlier, abandoned attempt at perforation before the maker settled on a different spot.

The graveyard sits on an elevated position at around 50 metres above sea level on the lower slopes of Leathaoibh, with views south over Dingle Harbour and northeast towards Mount Brandon. It is a place that has accumulated the dead across many centuries. Around three hundred small headstones, notched grave markers, and cross-slabs are scattered through the interior, most of them unnamed. The density and arrangement of these markers is thought to reflect the footprint of a medieval church that once stood here, as well as an oval enclosure visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1841. No coherent above-ground remains of that church survive today. The three holed stones, recorded during a graveyard survey conducted by Laurence Dunne in 2010, are among the few objects that hint at the site's more structured ecclesiastical past, when Kildrum was something more organised than the quiet, unassuming burial ground it appears to be now.
