Holy wells in Ireland were venerated long before Christianity and were frequently absorbed into the new faith, often acquiring dedications to saints or local clergy whose reputations for piety gave the water its protective or healing character. This particular well has carried two names. It was once called the Priest's Well, a designation common enough across the country, before acquiring a more specific identity as Fr. O'Connor's Well, linking it to a named individual whose memory was clearly worth preserving in the local tradition.
