Holy well, Carrigaline, Co. Cork

On a south-facing slope above the Owenboy river, within sight of Carrigaline village, a small stone structure sits in a tillage field looking, at first glance, more like a miniature ancient dwelling than a religious site.

It is, in fact, a holy well enclosure built in the beehive style, a corbelled stone construction in which courses of flat stones are laid in overlapping rings that gradually close to form a domed roof, without mortar and without any need for it. The building stands two metres tall, measures just under three metres across, and has walls roughly forty centimetres thick. A crude limestone cross is set into the concrete at the top, and five further crosses are inscribed on the outer walls. The entrance faces south, towards the river.

Inside, a circular plinth surrounds the well itself, and the space holds numerous votive offerings, the small tokens and gifts, often medals, rosary beads, rags, or coins, that people have left in petition or thanks over generations. A pattern, the Irish term for a festive gathering at a sacred site on the feast day of its associated saint, was held here on St. John's Eve, the night of the 23rd of June. According to an information plaque at the site, large crowds attended in the early nineteenth century to drink the water. St. John's Eve falls close to the summer solstice, and many such patterns across Ireland were held at this time of year, layering older seasonal observance with Christian practice in a way that was entirely unremarkable to those who took part.

The well sits in agricultural land on an east-west ridge, so access may depend on the time of year and the state of the surrounding field. The structure is modest in scale but unusually complete, and the inscribed crosses on the exterior walls reward a slow look on the way in or out.
