Holy well, Coill Sáile, Co. Galway

At the easternmost tip of Ros Dúgáin Point in Coill Sáile, County Galway, a holy well sits precisely at the high water mark, which means the sea comes to meet it at every tide.

It is a natural pothole, smooth and bowl-shaped, measuring roughly a quarter of a metre across, with a low semicircular surround of drystone walling built up on its western side. The simplicity is the point. There is no elaborate stonework, no carved saints, no votive canopy. Just a shallow depression in the rock, shaped by water over an immense span of time, given a modest human border, and named.

Locally it is known as Tobar Cholmcille, the well of Saint Colmcille, the sixth-century monk and scholar born in Donegal who founded the famous monastery on the Scottish island of Iona and remains one of the most widely venerated figures in Irish and Scottish Christianity. Wells bearing his name appear across Ireland and Scotland, often at liminal spots where fresh and salt water meet, or where land meets sea. The siting here, right at the tidal boundary, fits that tradition closely. The drystone surround, a few flat stones arranged in a rough arc, is the kind of minimal intervention that marks a place as meaningful without attempting to dominate it. Tim Robinson noted the well in his 1985 work on Connemara, and it was recorded in the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway, but it belongs to a category of site that tends to go quietly unnoticed even by people who pass within a short distance of it.
