Holy well, Commons, Co. Clare

Holy wells are among the most quietly persistent features of the Irish landscape, and the one at Commons in County Clare is no exception to that enduring, if understated, presence.

These sites sit at the intersection of pre-Christian water veneration and Catholic devotional practice, a layering that happened gradually across early medieval Ireland and left thousands of such springs, pools, and seeping hollows scattered across the countryside. Many retain patterns of use, the leaving of rags or tokens, the circling of the well in a prescribed direction, the offering of a prayer to a patron saint, that stretch back centuries with little interruption.
