The covering is described as clochán-type, referring to the dry-stone or mortared corbelled forms associated with early Irish ecclesiastical sites, though here the execution is more vernacular than ancient. A concrete grotto sits on the roof, and offerings have been left inside it, suggesting the well remains part of living devotional practice rather than archaeological record alone. The entrance faces south, and concrete blocks have been set around the base, giving the whole thing a layered quality, old intention worked over with newer materials across an unknown number of generations.

The water does not simply sit still. Runoff from the well flows away to the south-south-east through a lintelled channel, and at least one of the stones forming that channel may originally have served as a grave slab, repurposed at some point into the drainage work. That detail shifts the atmosphere of the place considerably. A grave slab is a marker of the dead; reusing one as a water channel is either pragmatic or ceremonially loaded, and it is not always easy to say which. The well sits within a broader complex of early Christian remains: Coole Abbey lies to the west, and the ruins of a church to the south-west, suggesting this small corner of east Cork was once a more substantial centre of religious life.

The site remains in occasional use, which means it is neither fully maintained nor fully abandoned. Visitors should expect a woodland setting with all the informality that implies, and the offerings in the grotto are a reminder that for some people this is not a curiosity but an active place of prayer.
