Holy well, Coolroe More, Co. Cork

In the townland of Coolroe More in north Cork, a small circular well sits covered by flagstones, overgrown and largely forgotten.

It does not appear on the Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842, which means it either escaped the surveyors' notice or had already slipped from common use by that point. Either way, the absence tells its own quiet story about how thoroughly a place of local devotion can disappear from the official record while persisting in local memory.

The well is known as Tober abhile, an Irish name meaning "well of the old tree", a phrase that suggests the kind of sacred association between water and ancient timber that appears at holy wells across Ireland. Writing in 1934, a source named Bowman noted that the devotional rounds, the traditional circuit of prayers performed by visitors to such wells, had long since been discontinued. The well itself had apparently been relocated at some point, forced to a new position by flooding from the nearby mountain, which is an unusual detail; most well traditions are so strongly tied to a fixed spot that even minor disturbance can cause a site to fall out of use entirely. Around 1905, a man named O'Callaghan found a cross-inscribed stone roughly two feet long and one foot wide lying near the well. Such stones are common finds at early Christian sacred sites in Ireland and typically indicate that a place had religious significance stretching back many centuries, though whether this particular stone was connected to the well's original setting or arrived there some other way is not recorded. The well itself, one metre across and lined with stone, now sits sealed beneath its flagstone cover, the old tree long gone and the rounds long since discontinued.
