Holy well, Dromard, Co. Sligo

Tucked into a hollow at the foot of a steep north-facing ridge in County Sligo, two holy wells sit side by side within a small square stone enclosure, sharing a space that has been in active religious use for centuries.

What makes the site quietly arresting is not its size, which is modest, eleven metres across, but the density of ritual objects gathered within it: a crucifixion plaque set into the enclosure wall, a plain rectangular stone altar, and, appended to the western side of the larger St. Patrick's well, a tiny pool dedicated to St. Brigid, roofed by a single massive slab nearly two metres long and known locally as St. Brigid's Flag. That slab is covered in crudely inscribed crosses, the kind of repeated devotional marking that accumulates over generations rather than being placed by any single hand.

The St. Brigid's well itself is a subrectangular pool measuring just 0.8 metres by 0.6 metres, defined on its southern side by a semicircular stone wall, with stone steps descending on the north side to the water. Patterns, the old Irish term for a patron saint's day gathering involving prayer, procession, and sometimes prescribed circuits of a sacred site, are still held here annually on the 29th of June. A third well, separate from the walled enclosure and located just under two metres to its north, served a specific penitential function: pilgrims would wash their feet there before and after completing the pattern. The survival of that practice in living tradition gives the site an unusual continuity, a place where the choreography of devotion has not been entirely lost.
