Holy Well, Drumatober, Co. Galway

A holy well that has quietly relocated is not something you encounter every day.

At Drumatober in County Galway, the spring known locally as Our Lady's Well sits within a small oval chamber of drystone construction, roughly a metre across and less than a metre deep, with a scatter of loose stones around it that most likely accumulated from generations of field clearance. A recessed alcove built into the southern side of the chamber once held religious icons and coins, with more offerings spread around the western side. When surveyors inspected the site, however, the well itself was dry. Local knowledge supplied the explanation: the water source had shifted, and now rises somewhere near a large tree standing just to the west.

The well sits immediately south of a children's burial ground, a pairing that reflects a broader Irish tradition of placing sacred water sources in proximity to liminal or consecrated ground. It is visited each May, a pattern consistent with the Marian devotions that became attached to many older spring sites across the country. The nearby rock outcrop adds another layer of local memory: a series of natural depressions in the stone are known as St Brendan's knees, a name suggesting that the sixth-century navigator and monastic founder was, in local tradition at least, associated with this particular patch of Galway ground. Whether the hollows genuinely resemble kneeling impressions or whether the name preserves some older story now lost, they give the site an additional character that goes beyond the well itself.
