Holy well, Garrymore, Co. Galway

In the gently undulating grassland of Garrymore, a large flagstone sits deliberately out of place.

It was moved, not by weather or neglect, but by human hands, shifted aside to make it easier to reach the water below. That small act of practical rearrangement is, in its quiet way, a sign of how seriously this well was still being used within living memory.

The well itself is modest in scale: an underground spring enclosed within an oval mortared chamber, roughly a metre long and sixty centimetres wide. Two stone steps lead down to the water from the north. Holy wells of this type were a feature of Irish life for centuries, occupying a space somewhere between the sacred and the everyday. They were sites of pattern days and folk cures, but also simply places where people drew water. In Garrymore, local knowledge confirms the well was put to both medicinal and domestic use until about twenty years before the site was formally recorded, which places active use well into the late twentieth century. That continuity is not unusual in itself, but it is easy to underestimate: many sites described as ancient survivals had in fact faded from use long before anyone wrote them down. This one had not. Approximately five hundred metres to the south-south-east lies the site known as St. Patrick's Stone, a proximity that suggests this corner of north Galway held, or perhaps still holds, a quiet concentration of devotional and folk significance.
