Holy Sites & Wells
Beneath the concrete of a retail development in Killarney lies a holy well that no longer has a visible presence in the world, though it has not entirely disappeared from the landscape.
Holy wells are among the most quietly persistent features of Irish topography, sites of local veneration often predating the arrival of Christianity and later absorbed into Catholic devotional practice. This one was covered over during construction, leaving nothing above ground to mark its existence.
The only remaining trace is indirect: a lane to the south of the former well's location carries the name Well Lane South, a piece of local nomenclature that outlasted the feature it once described. Place names of this kind frequently survive long after the physical reality has gone, preserving in a street sign or a field name what would otherwise be entirely lost. Beyond this detail and the oral record of local knowledge, the history of this particular well, its dedication, any pattern days associated with it, or the extent of its use, is not recoverable from what survives.
