Holy Sites & Wells
At the bottom of a quiet valley in County Waterford, a natural spring sits almost entirely forgotten beneath a tangle of briars. It is classified as a holy well, that most Irish of designations for a spring believed to carry sacred or curative properties, often associated with a local saint and visited on pattern days for prayer and ritual. Yet this one carries none of those associations, at least none that have survived. There is no patron saint recorded, no feast day attached, no tradition of rounds or offerings. What remains is the spring itself, in pasture beside a small stream, with nothing to explain why it was ever considered anything more than a convenient source of water.
