Holy well, Kiltanon, Co. Clare

There is a holy well marked on the maps of Kiltanon in County Clare, but anyone who goes looking for it today will find the evidence frustratingly elusive.

What remains at the roadside is a low arrangement of moss-covered stones, built in drystone construction and rising three to four courses in a rough square-plan form, something between a marker and a small pier. A large flat flag, barely visible beneath the encroaching vegetation of the boundary ditch, lies nearby. Whether either of these features ever formed part of the well's structure, or whether they arrived here for entirely unrelated reasons, is not clear.

The site appears by name on both the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map and the 1920 edition of the 6-inch OS map, which at minimum confirms that it was a recognised and named feature well into the twentieth century. Holy wells in Ireland typically served as focal points for local devotion, often associated with a patron saint and visited on a specific feast day, sometimes with rounds of prayer performed in a prescribed route around the site. At Kiltanon, however, there is no visible well shaft or basin remaining, and no trace of any well feature in the pasture field to the east of the boundary. The most likely explanation is that the well was at some point deliberately blocked up or simply allowed to fill and collapse, leaving behind only the stones at the roadside and the name preserved in cartographic memory.
