Holy well, Limehill, Co. Galway

A few metres from a children's burial ground in Limehill, County Galway, a spring well sits enclosed by a crumbling ring of dry-laid stone.

The circular surround, roughly two metres across, is in poor condition, its edges softened by time and weather. Just to the north of the well, a small mound of loose stones has gathered, though nobody can say with any confidence whether it belongs to the well's history or simply accumulated there by chance. These ambiguities are part of what makes the site quietly compelling: it is a place where the past has not quite explained itself.

Holy wells are among the most enduring features of the Irish landscape, functioning for centuries as sites of devotion, healing, and local ritual, often long predating the Christian frameworks later attached to them. This particular well is a spring, meaning it draws on groundwater rising naturally to the surface, and the drystone enclosure, built without mortar, is a traditional method of demarcating such a source. The proximity to a children's burial ground, known in Irish tradition as a cillín, adds a layer of significance. Cilliní were used for the interment of unbaptised infants and others considered ineligible for consecrated ground, and they frequently cluster near older sacred features in the landscape. Whether that relationship is incidental here or reflects a deeper, shared history of the site remains an open question. What can be said is that by around 1940, a modern well was sunk some eight metres to the south, suggesting the spring had been a working water source for the local community until relatively recently.
