Holy well, Newtown, Co. Cork

A holy well that has physically moved location is unusual enough, but this one in Newtown, County Cork carries a specific reason for its displacement: local tradition holds that someone used its water for washing, an act considered a desecration, after which the well migrated of its own accord roughly 1.4 kilometres to the north-east from a spot known as Crannavella Tree.

The well now sits in pasture on the eastern side of a field fence, modest in appearance, its stone and cement lining reinforced on one side to encase a flat, unmarked slab. A metal cross is mounted on top of the wall. It is the kind of structure that could be passed without a second glance, were it not for the quiet weight of belief that has gathered around it over centuries.

The well is dedicated to Our Lady in current local memory, visited in May according to those who know it, though an older layer of identity runs beneath that Marian association. Writing in 1989, a researcher named Dunworth recorded it as Tobarineid, identifying it as the well of St Sinnade, and noted that it was reputed to hold a cure for eye complaints. People with sore eyes, he wrote, used to travel to it from far and near. The well also had a pattern day, a fixed annual gathering at a holy well for prayer, rounds, and sometimes festivity, though no date for that observance was recorded. The name St Sinnade does not appear widely in the mainstream canon of Irish saints, which is itself part of the interest; many such local dedications preserve the memory of figures who were venerated intensely within a small area but never acquired wider ecclesiastical recognition.
