Holy well, Pollacorragune, Co. Galway

A holy well enclosed within a small mortared stone wall might seem unremarkable enough, but this one at Pollacorragune carries the trace of a gathering that was deliberately extinguished.

The well lies within the early ecclesiastical complex at Kilbenan in County Galway, about 110 metres northwest of the old church, and what survives is a rectangular enclosure roughly 2.8 metres by 2.2 metres, standing about 1.2 metres high where it still stands at all. The western half of the wall has collapsed, and the structure is described as poorly preserved. The entrance opens in the southeast wall. On its own, this would be a quietly forgotten piece of stonework in a field. What gives it a different quality is what used to happen here every year.

Until the early nineteenth century, the well was the site of a patrún, the Irish term for a patron-day gathering held on or near a saint's feast day, typically combining prayer at a sacred site with music, dancing, and communal socialising. These gatherings had deep roots, blending Christian observance with customs that the institutional church increasingly viewed with suspicion. At Pollacorragune, the patrún fell on the last Sunday of July. It drew people reliably, year after year, until the local parish priest moved to end it. The phrase recorded in Killanin and Duignan's guide to Irish antiquities is a telling one: he suppressed the gathering after "scenting pagan practices." That particular choice of words suggests not a clear doctrinal offence but something more atmospheric, a feeling that the proceedings had drifted too far from acceptable piety. Whether the dancing or the drinking or simply the atmosphere of the occasion gave him pause, the pattern was brought to a close, and what had been an annual focal point became simply a ruined enclosure in a field.
