Holy Sites & Wells
At Rinville, on the southern shore of Galway Bay, there is a holy well whose particular story has yet to be fully set down in the public record.
Holy wells are among the most quietly persistent features of the Irish landscape, places where pre-Christian veneration of water sources was absorbed into, rather than erased by, Christian practice. Across Ireland, thousands of such wells survive, each typically associated with a local saint, a pattern day, a tradition of rounds or prayers, and sometimes the tying of votive offerings, known as clooties, to nearby branches. The well at Rinville belongs to this long tradition, though the details that would give it its own specific character remain to be documented and shared.
