Holy well, Rossline, Co. Cork

In a field near Rossline in north County Cork, there is a well that nobody can find any more.

It was known as the Blessed Well, it sat roughly eighty metres south of an early ecclesiastical enclosure, and within living memory people were still making rounds at it. Rounds, in this tradition, refers to a pattern of ritual circumambulation, walking a prescribed circuit around a sacred site, often barefoot, often in silence, pausing to pray at specific points. The practice is ancient, pre-Christian in origin though thoroughly absorbed into local Catholic devotion, and it survived at many holy wells long after any formal church sanction had faded. At Rossline, it survived into the twentieth century, and then the well itself seems to have disappeared.

Linehan, writing in 1997, recorded both the location and the living memory of the practice, placing the well in a field close to an ecclesiastical enclosure whose origins are early enough to suggest this corner of Cork had a significant sacred presence long before any surviving structure. Such enclosures, typically circular or subcircular boundaries marking an early Christian or pre-Christian sacred site, are often found in association with holy wells, the two features reinforcing each other across centuries of local religious life. That the well could still be described by memory in the late twentieth century, yet could not be physically located by the time the inventory was compiled, gives the place a quietly unsettling quality. The land changed, or the well silted up, or the precise field became harder to identify as the people who knew it grew fewer.
