This one at Toehead followed a different trajectory. At some point in the early twentieth century it had already shifted from devotional use to something altogether more practical, serving as a domestic water source for people in the area. By the time surveyors came to document it, that everyday function had also lapsed. Local knowledge preserved the detail of the covering stone slab, but the well itself could not be located on the ground, the surrounding area having grown too dense to penetrate.

There is something quietly telling about that sequence, from sacred site to household tap to overgrown absence. No dramatic event seems to have ended its use; it was simply set aside, then covered, then forgotten by degrees. Whether the stone slab is still there, and whether the well beneath it still holds water, are questions the vegetation has so far declined to answer.
