House – 17th century, Waterford City, Co. Waterford

Carved into the limestone of both a doorway and a large chamfered fireplace, the date 1632 appears in false relief, a decorative technique in which numerals or lettering are raised against a recessed background rather than cut into the stone. It is an unusual detail to find twice in the same building, and it anchors this two-storey house in Waterford City to a very specific moment in the early seventeenth century, when much of the city's fabric was being shaped by the competing pressures of colonial settlement and older civic tradition.

The house is attached to the site of St Stephen's church, which may also have served as a hospital, a pairing that was not unusual in medieval and early modern Ireland, where religious foundations frequently combined spiritual and medical functions. The building measures roughly 12.7 metres east to west and 7.55 metres north to south, and its walls, in punch-dressed limestone, survive to a height of around 3.75 metres. The south wall carries a segmental-arched doorway alongside a twin-light and a three-light window; the east gable has another three-light window; and the north wall holds the dated fireplace. The structure survives almost complete, with the re-roofed fabric largely intact, the main loss being the brick apexes of the gables, which appear to have been later additions anyway. The combination of precise datestone, near-complete walls, and an association with a possible hospital site makes this a quietly layered piece of early modern urban fabric, the kind of building that tends to be passed over in favour of grander civic monuments.
