House – 18th/19th century, Ballyglass, Co. Galway

In the townland of Ballyglass in County Galway stands a house dating to the eighteenth or nineteenth century, recorded as a monument but presently without a public account of what it is, who built it, or what survives.

That gap in the record is, in its own way, as interesting as the structure itself. Ireland's landscape is scattered with houses from this period, ranging from modest farmhouses in rubble stone to more ambitious two-storey compositions put up by minor gentry or prosperous tenant farmers, and Ballyglass almost certainly holds one such building, waiting for its story to be told.

The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were a period of considerable change in rural Connacht. Landlord estates were being consolidated, improved, and sometimes dramatically remodelled; at the same time, the catastrophe of the Famine in the 1840s emptied whole districts and left many houses roofless within a generation of being built. A house recorded as a monument in Ballyglass could belong to either side of that divide, built in a moment of relative confidence or abandoned in the years of collapse that followed. Without specific documentary evidence, it is impossible to say more about who commissioned it, who occupied it, or what architectural form it took, and the notes available for this site do not yet supply those details.
