House – 18th/19th century, Gortderrig, Co. Kerry

On the north-facing slopes of The Paps of Dana, a pair of rounded hills in County Kerry long associated with the earth goddess Anu in Irish mythology, the remains of a small rectangular house sit quietly in open pasture.

The building is modest in scale, roughly 7.7 metres from north to south and only 2.8 metres across, built in the drystone tradition, where walls are constructed without mortar, relying entirely on the careful stacking of stone. Those walls have largely collapsed, though they still read clearly in the landscape, and at the northern end a gable wall survives to a height of around four metres, which gives some sense of how enclosed and upright this structure once was.

The house dates to the 18th or 19th century, a period when marginal upland ground across Munster was being settled or seasonally worked by farming families who built in locally available stone. The entrance, 1.4 metres wide, is set into the east wall slightly north of centre, a typical arrangement that would have kept the interior sheltered from prevailing westerly winds. About 50 metres to the northwest, there is a possible enclosure associated with the site, which may point to some form of agricultural activity alongside the dwelling, though its precise relationship to the house is uncertain.

The setting on the slopes of The Paps lends the ruin a quiet significance beyond its modest dimensions. These hills carry a long ceremonial history, with a cairn on each summit and the wider area associated with early medieval assembly and ritual. A house this small, built this late, on ground this exposed, speaks to the particular pressures of rural life in pre-Famine Kerry, where families occupied terrain that earlier centuries had largely left to pasture and myth.
