House – 18th/19th century, Keel, Co. Mayo

On a south-south-east facing slope above the Atlantic at Keel on Achill Island, a small rectangular house has been slowly disappearing into the bog.

It is not ruined in any dramatic sense. It is simply being absorbed, the way the landscape here absorbs everything eventually, quietly and without ceremony.

The structure measures roughly 4.2 metres along its longer axis and 2.6 metres across, built from roughly coursed drystone masonry, meaning stones laid in approximate horizontal layers without mortar, with walls nearly a metre thick. That wall thickness was a practical response to Atlantic exposure rather than a sign of wealth or ambition. The northwest and northeast walls now sit just below the present surface of the peat, which has crept up around them to a depth of about 0.8 metres. The southwest wall has gone entirely, robbed out at some point for building material elsewhere, though its line is still legible in the ground. A narrow entrance, 0.65 metres wide, opened at the southwest end of the southeast wall. The interior holds nothing; no hearth, no partition, no trace of fittings. The house dates broadly to the 18th or 19th century, a period when smallholdings on marginal Atlantic-facing ground like this were commonplace across Connacht, worked by families whose presence in the landscape left little beyond the outlines of their buildings.

What is quietly arresting about a site like this is the scale. A space not much larger than a modern bathroom, walls nearly as thick as the room is wide, an entrance barely wide enough to step through sideways with a load of turf. The peat that is swallowing the walls also preserved them, holding the stonework in place long after the roof, the people, and any moveable contents were gone.
