House – 18th/19th century, Knockanaddoge, Co. Kilkenny

On the flat, boggy ground of the Dinin Valley in County Kilkenny, a low arrangement of earth and stone marks where a house and its yard once stood.

What catches the attention of anyone who looks closely is how completely a dwelling, its surrounding small fields, and the life that went with them had already vanished by the time the Ordnance Survey revised its maps around 1900. The first edition six-inch map of 1839 shows the house, yard, and fields clearly enough; sixty years later, only the outline remained.

The remnants that survive describe a reasonably substantial rural property. The house itself, at the southern end of the complex, has internal dimensions of roughly 8.5 metres north to south and 12 metres east to west, with walls about 1.5 metres thick, though the north wall no longer stands. A wide entrance, some 4 metres across, sits at the eastern end of the south wall, and a further gap appears in the east wall a short distance north of the northeast corner. To the north of the house, a rectangular yard measuring approximately 17 metres by 10 metres is enclosed by a low earth and stone bank, with a drainage channel running along the outside of the western bank, a practical detail that speaks to the boggy nature of the ground. The west gable of the house projects slightly beyond the yard wall, leaving a narrow gap between the two structures. Trees have since taken hold along the yard bank, and the first-edition map records a well about 75 metres to the northwest. When surveyors first catalogued the site formally in 1987, it was left out of the record entirely; only in 1996 was it recognised, listed somewhat abstractly as a rectangular enclosure, the domestic character of the place quietly set aside in the classification.
