That this Bronze Age structure survives at all as a legible set of features is largely a matter of bureaucratic accident: road improvement schemes in Ireland have, over the past few decades, generated an enormous body of archaeological knowledge simply because construction work requires advance excavation.

When archaeologists investigated this site at Danesfort in 2007, working under licence ahead of the Kilcullen to Waterford road upgrade, they found the characteristic signature of a roundhouse: a circle of post-holes and pits marking where upright timbers once stood, with a line of post-holes at the south-east that may represent the edge of an entrance feature or projecting porch. At the centre of the structure sat a hearth, one that had been recut on several occasions, suggesting the house was used and maintained over a period of time rather than briefly occupied and abandoned. Outside to the south-east, another hearth, a windbreak, and a cluster of waste pits appear to have formed an associated working area, the kind of outdoor space where cooking, craft work, or refuse disposal would have taken place. The site was not isolated either. A closely comparable structure lay roughly twenty metres to the north, and a third house was excavated approximately thirty metres to the south-west, pointing to a small community or farmstead rather than a single dwelling standing alone on the north-facing slope.
