House – Bronze Age, Dunbell Big, Co. Kilkenny

Between 1606 and 1439 BC, a family or household in what is now County Kilkenny arranged six timber posts in a rough semicircle, stretched a roof over them, and went about the ordinary business of Bronze Age life.

That domestic routine left almost nothing visible above ground, but when road improvement works on the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford route prompted an excavation in 2007, archaeologists found enough below the surface to sketch the outline of the place with reasonable confidence.

The house at Dunbell Big was small, around five metres in diameter, and circular in plan, a form typical of prehistoric Irish domestic building. The post-holes that defined its structure survive in a semicircular arrangement, and the shallow curvilinear ditches running around the outside were likely drip gullies, channels designed to carry rainwater away from the base of the walls. To the south, an oblong pit probably served as an entrance porch, and further pits outside the main enclosure appear to have been used for waste disposal. One of those external pits contained sherds of a middle Bronze Age domestic vessel, the kind of coarse pottery used for everyday cooking or storage, which places the site firmly in an ordinary household rather than a ceremonial or elite context. Charcoal recovered from one of the ditches was radiocarbon dated to between 1606 and 1439 cal BC, giving the site a lifespan that overlaps with the height of the European Bronze Age. The site was not entirely undisturbed when excavators arrived; a modern field boundary had been cut through the centre of the remains running northeast to southwest, removing whatever evidence once lay along that line.

What makes the site quietly remarkable is not any single dramatic find but the ordinariness of it. A small round house on a gentle rise, a few broken pots, some post-holes holding the ghost of a timber frame, all of it sitting beneath pasture until a road project brought it briefly into the light.
