House – indeterminate date, Ballyargadaun, Co. Mayo

On a low rise in pasture at Ballyargadaun in County Mayo, there is a structure that resists easy classification.

Its date is unknown, its builders unrecorded, and yet its outline survives clearly enough to be measured and mapped: a subrectangular footprint running roughly east to west, about twenty and a half metres long and six and a half metres wide, enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone no more than half a metre high. It is the kind of place that registers as a subtle thickening of the ground rather than anything dramatic, easy to walk past without noticing that the slight ridge underfoot was once a wall.

What can be said about the interior is that it was divided into two distinct sectors, the larger of the two occupying the eastern end and stretching to around eleven metres in length. This two-part arrangement is common enough in vernacular rural buildings across Ireland, where a single structure might house both people and animals under the same roof, separated by an internal partition. Whether that was the function here is not certain. The designation "indeterminate date" is itself telling: without excavation or documentary evidence, the structure cannot be tied to any particular period, and could belong almost anywhere in the last several centuries. It was recorded as part of a local archaeological survey covering the Ballinrobe district and the areas around Lough Mask and Lough Carra, a landscape that holds a considerable density of remains from many different eras.
