House – indeterminate date, Ballyconnoe, Co. Clare

On the Burren plateau in County Clare, a low rectangle of collapsed stone sits in open pasture, its walls barely thirty centimetres high at their tallest point.

It is the kind of structure that most walkers would step over without registering, yet it represents the floor plan of a house, roughly 5.5 metres by 3.5 metres internally, where someone once lived or at least sheltered. Nobody knows when. The date is genuinely indeterminate, which on the Burren is not unusual; the limestone upland is so densely layered with human activity across so many centuries that individual features often resist tidy classification.

What makes this particular ruin quietly interesting is its relationship to the landscape around it. The house was built directly against the north-western face of a drystone wall running north-east to south-west, suggesting that whoever put it up was working within an already-established field boundary rather than starting from scratch. That boundary wall is itself part of a multiperiod field system, meaning it accumulated and changed across several distinct phases of use over an extended period of time. About thirteen metres to the north-east, there is a possible entrance through the same wall, implying that the house sat just inside a defined territory with a controlled point of access. Seven metres to the north-west lies a paddock or corral, and roughly twenty metres to the west-south-west stands a second house of similarly indeterminate date. The grouping, a dwelling, an enclosure for animals, another dwelling nearby, is familiar from rural settlement patterns across Ireland, though the Burren's exposed limestone terrain gives the whole arrangement an unusually spare, legible quality. Very little vegetation obscures the stonework here, which means that relationships between features that would be buried or overgrown elsewhere remain visible on the surface.
