A cashel is a type of early medieval stone enclosure, essentially a fortified farmstead bounded by a dry-stone wall, and they are common across the west of Ireland. What is less common is finding a building inside one that nobody has yet managed to place in time with any confidence.

The structure measures roughly eight metres along its longer axis and five and a half metres across, and it sits just north-east of centre within the enclosure. It is one of two rectangular buildings sharing that cashel, and neither appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of 1842 or 1915. That absence is itself a small puzzle. By the mid-nineteenth century, OS surveyors were generally thorough about recording field monuments, even ruinous ones. The fact that both buildings went unrecorded across two separate mapping campaigns, separated by more than seventy years, suggests they were either sufficiently collapsed or overgrown to escape notice, or that their remains were ambiguous enough not to register as structures at all. Whether they pre-date the cashel, were built within it at some later period, or represent something else entirely, remains an open question.
