House
In the rough pasture of Ballyhomulta in County Clare, a low rectangle of grass-covered stone marks the outline of a house that nobody can quite date.
The walls, built in the double-faced style common to Irish vernacular and early medieval construction alike, where two outer stone faces contain a rubble core, survive on three sides only; the northern side has disappeared entirely, whether robbed out for later building work or simply lost to the slow work of the ground. The interior measures roughly eight metres along its northwest to southeast axis and four metres across, proportions that would have made for a modest but not unusual dwelling by the standards of rural Ireland across many centuries.
