House – indeterminate date, Barntick, Co. Clare

South of Killone Lake in County Clare, a patch of rough, unreclaimed ground holds the faint outline of a building that nobody has yet managed to date.

Visible only as a grassed-over rectangle of wall foundations, roughly six metres by three, it is the kind of trace that satellite imagery catches more readily than the human eye walking across the field. What makes it quietly odd is not the building itself but its position: it sits within the north-eastern sector of what may be a cashel, a type of early medieval stone-walled enclosure typically built to protect a farmstead or small settlement, and the relationship between the two structures remains entirely unexplained.

The possible cashel that surrounds, or once surrounded, this building has its own separate record, and neither feature has been securely assigned a period. The house foundations came to wider attention through satellite coverage from Digital Globe imagery taken between 2011 and 2013, and were confirmed again on Google Earth as recently as January 2021. By that point, a modern housing development had already pushed up against the north-western sector of the cashel, physically encroaching on what was once the outer edge of the enclosure. The result is an unusual collision: suburban Clare pressing against the ghostly perimeter of something potentially very old, while at the centre of that perimeter a small rectangular structure sits in rough ground, its date and purpose still open.
