House – indeterminate date, Caheravoley, Co. Galway

At Caheravoley in County Galway, a cluster of collapsed house walls lies quietly beneath a covering of grass, the outlines of several distinct structures still readable across the ground.

What makes the arrangement quietly curious is its variety: rectangular buildings of different sizes grouped within and around a larger enclosure, plus a small circular house sitting just outside the enclosure's southern boundary, as if it belonged to a slightly different domestic tradition or a different moment in time.

Five structures in total have been recorded here. Inside the enclosure, two larger rectangular houses survive as grassed-over rubble, each with evidence of an internal division suggesting separate rooms or functional areas within a single dwelling. The more easterly of these measures roughly nine metres by five; the southerly one runs to eleven and a half metres in length. To the south-east of that second house, two smaller rectangular buildings are also visible, one orientated east-west and one north-south, their dimensions ranging from six to eleven metres in length. Just beyond the enclosure's southern edge, a circular house around five metres in diameter completes the group. The enclosure itself, a type of enclosed settlement known from early medieval Ireland onwards in which a defined boundary wall or bank contained domestic and agricultural activity, provides the organising framework for most of the cluster. The date of the structures has not been established with any precision, which leaves open the question of whether they represent a single phase of occupation or several generations of use and rebuilding.

The remains are low-lying and unobtrusive, their forms most legible as slight ridges and hollows in the turf rather than as upstanding masonry. Aerial photography has contributed to understanding the layout of the site, and the ground-level picture rewards patient observation rather than a quick glance.
