House – indeterminate date, Cappagh, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Cappagh, in County Mayo, there is a house with no date attached to it.

It has been recorded, catalogued, and given a monument number, yet the question of when it was built remains formally unanswered. That designation, indeterminate date, is not uncommon in Irish archaeological records, but it carries a particular weight when applied to a domestic structure. Houses, unlike hillforts or passage tombs, feel as though they ought to be placeable in time. Someone built this one, lived in it, and left it behind, and the record currently offers no answer as to when any of that happened.
