House – indeterminate date, Cloghboley, Co. Galway

Inside the stone enclosure at Cloghboley in County Galway, the ground holds the outlines of four rectangular houses arranged around a cashel, a type of circular dry-stone fortress wall used in early medieval Ireland to enclose a settlement or farmstead.

What makes this site quietly arresting is how much domestic life can still be read from foundations that have never been fully excavated or precisely dated. Four separate buildings, each with its own position, size, and degree of survival, suggest a community that used the interior of the enclosure intensively over time, perhaps across multiple generations.

The four structures were recorded with enough care to reveal distinct personalities. The first house, in the north-west quadrant, has well-defined double-faced stone walls measuring roughly six metres by four, and it sits directly over part of a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber typically used in early medieval settlements for storage or refuge. That the house overlies the souterrain suggests it was built after the underground feature had already gone out of use, or at least that the builders were unconcerned about it. The second house, larger at eight metres by five, abuts the cashel wall on the north-east side and may have been divided into two rooms, though its remains are poorly preserved. The third house, near the cashel entrance on the south-east, survives only as the foundations of its north and west walls, partly buried beneath a modern wall built by someone who had no particular interest in what lay beneath. The fourth structure, to the south, is reduced to a low platform defined by large stone blocks, roughly six metres by two and a half, its original function uncertain. The site was noted by McCaffrey in 1952.
