House – indeterminate date, Coolnambrisklaun, Co. Kilkenny

On a ridge top in Coolnambrisklaun, County Kilkenny, there is a building that has almost entirely returned to the earth.

Its foundations trace a rectangle roughly thirteen metres long and less than six wide, aligned northwest to southeast, sitting at the centre of a moated site. A moated site, in the Irish medieval context, typically consists of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled or dry ditch, enclosing a domestic residence and its associated structures. At ground level, this particular building is barely legible, a faint suggestion in the pasture. It is the kind of place you could walk across without registering that anything was there.

What makes the location harder to dismiss is the position chosen for it. The ridge commands views across the Gloshia river valley to the southwest, the Deen river valley to the east, and southward along the ridge toward the River Dinin. Whoever lived here, and whenever they built, they chose their ground deliberately. The building was noted by Barry in 1977, though even then it registered only faintly at surface level. It was aerial photography, specifically a photograph taken on 14 March 2001, that brought the foundations into clarity, the kind of clarity that only comes from above, when low sun or crop variation reveals what centuries of weathering and ploughing have otherwise suppressed. The date of construction remains unknown; the site carries no firm attribution to any particular period, owner, or builder.

For anyone curious enough to seek it out, the building is not the thing you will see so much as the thing you will know is there once you understand the ground beneath the grass. The moated enclosure around it is the more legible feature, framing an absence that was once, in some unrecorded century, a domestic interior with walls and a roof and a view that stretched to three river valleys.
