House – indeterminate date, Cross, Co. Mayo

In a pasture field at Cross in County Mayo, a low rectangular outline survives in the grass, barely distinguishable from the surrounding ground unless the light falls at the right angle.

It measures roughly eight metres east to west and four metres north to south, and three of its four sides retain the ghost of a wall footing beneath the turf. The fourth side has been swallowed by a field wall running along a laneway, which sliced through the structure at some point after it was built and before anyone thought to record it.

When the site was documented in 1986, those grass-covered footings were enough to confirm it as a rectangular house set on the tip of a low east-west ridge. What makes the spot quietly compelling is not the structure itself but its context. It is the most northerly of three houses arranged in a close north-south row, all sharing parallel long axes orientated east to west, suggesting they were either planned together or grew up in deliberate relation to one another. About forty metres to the east sits a ringfort, the circular enclosed settlement type common across early medieval Ireland, built by enclosing a farmstead with an earthen bank or stone wall. Whether the houses predate, postdate, or were contemporaneous with that ringfort remains unknown; the date of the houses has not been established.
