A cashel is a dry-stone ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement common across early medieval Ireland, and this one sheltered at least a pair of structures whose exact age remains unknown. Today, neither house leaves any mark on the ground whatsoever. What exists instead, in the northern sector where one of the buildings once lay, is a modern clearance cairn, a heap of stones gathered and piled by later farming activity, quietly replacing one kind of ruin with another.

The scholar John O'Donovan, whose nineteenth-century fieldwork formed the basis of much early Irish topographical knowledge, recorded a round pile of stones in the northern part of the cashel's interior and interpreted it as the remains of an oblong or oval house. A second structure was visible in the south-eastern quadrant, though it was already so far gone that no measurements could be taken. That account was later published in O'Flanagan's 1927 volume of O'Donovan's letters, which collected the fieldwork correspondence O'Donovan had produced while surveying for the Ordnance Survey in the 1830s. By the time anyone returned to look more carefully, both features had vanished entirely from the surface, leaving only O'Donovan's written description as evidence that anything domestic had ever stood here at all.
