House – indeterminate date, Garraun, Co. Galway

On the Galway landscape at Garraun, a low rectangle of grass-covered stone sits quietly in the ground, its outline just legible enough to suggest that walls once stood here, and that people once moved in and out through a doorway facing roughly south-east.

It is not dramatic. It is barely there. But that near-invisibility is precisely the point.

The remains sit centrally within a cashel, a type of early stone-walled enclosure, roughly circular in form, that was used in early medieval Ireland to define and protect a homestead or small settlement. Within that enclosure, this rectangular outline measures approximately 5.2 metres in length and 4.7 metres in width, oriented on a north-west to south-east axis. A possible entrance is discernible at the south-east end. Around four metres to the north, a second comparable outline has been recorded. Whether these two structures were in use simultaneously, or belong to different phases of occupation, is not known. The date of the site remains unestablished, and no excavation has resolved the question. What survives is the faintest physical grammar of a domestic space, two rooms or two households or two moments in time pressed into the same small enclosure, now readable only as subtle changes in the texture of the ground.
