House – indeterminate date, Inis Gé Thuaidh, Co. Mayo

On the summit of a grass-covered sandhill on Inis Gé Thuaidh, a small island off the coast of County Mayo, a scatter of stones barely breaks the surface.

To an untrained eye they would read as nothing at all, just low humps of rock half-swallowed by sand and turf. But these faint outlines, sitting towards the southern edge of the mound known as Bailey Mór, are recorded as the possible remains of houses, their age unknown and their exact purpose unresolved.

What survives amounts to two adjoining areas of stonework. The larger is a subcircular or subrectangular arrangement of stones measuring roughly three to four metres across, with two upright stones at its northern edge that may once have defined an entrance passage running northeast to southwest. Immediately to the south sits a smaller subcircular area, approximately two metres east to west and three metres north to south, outlined by a further setting of low stones. The remains are described as meagre and poorly defined, and the sandy, grassy surface of the mound has done little to preserve whatever structure once stood here. The site is a National Monument in state ownership, which at least ensures its ambiguity is protected, even if its origins remain unclear. Inis Gé Thuaidh, sometimes rendered as North Inishkea, is one of a pair of islands that were permanently inhabited until 1931, when the community abandoned them following a tragedy at sea, and the presence of structural remains on Bailey Mór adds another quiet layer to that long, interrupted history of human settlement.
