House – indeterminate date, Kilcurrivard, Co. Galway

In the townland of Kilcurrivard, in County Galway, a structure sits on the archaeological record without a date attached to it.

It is catalogued simply as a house of indeterminate date, which is, in its quiet way, a genuinely unusual designation. Most recorded buildings can be anchored, however roughly, to a century or a broad period. When even that proves impossible, it suggests a building that has resisted the usual tools of classification, whether through the loss of documentary evidence, the ambiguity of its construction materials, or the simple fact that no one has yet looked closely enough.

Kilcurrivard is a small rural townland in Galway, and like many such places in the west of Ireland, it carries layers of settlement that do not always announce themselves clearly. Houses in this part of the country range from late medieval tower-house dependencies and post-medieval vernacular cottages through to nineteenth-century agricultural dwellings, and distinguishing between them, particularly when a building is ruined or heavily modified, can be a considerable challenge. The designation of indeterminate date is not a failure of scholarship so much as an honest acknowledgement that the evidence, at least as currently assessed, does not point firmly in any one direction.

Beyond the fact of its existence and location, very little can be said about this particular structure with any confidence. It remains a placeholder of sorts, a recorded presence waiting for further investigation to give it context, a date, and perhaps a story.
