House – indeterminate date, Leamaneh, Co. Clare

Within the cashel of Caherscreebeen, near Leamaneh in County Clare, the outline of a rectangular house lies pressed almost flat into the ground, its walls reduced to a low, grass-covered spread barely half a metre high in places.

What makes the site quietly arresting is precisely this compression of the past: a domestic interior, once roofed and inhabited, now legible only as a faint rectangular swell in the earth, measuring roughly ten and a half metres east to west and just over seven metres north to south. The entrance, a gap of about 1.2 metres, sits centrally in the east wall, the conventional orientation for an Irish vernacular structure seeking morning light and shelter from the prevailing westerly weather.

The house sits inside a cashel, a type of stone-walled enclosure common in early medieval Ireland, typically circular or oval in plan and built to protect a farmstead and its inhabitants. This particular cashel, Caherscreebeen, contains at least one other feature of note: a souterrain to the west, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber that in Irish archaeological contexts was used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation of perishable goods. The relationship between the house and these other structures hints at a small self-contained settlement, though the date of the house itself remains unresolved. Complicating the picture further, the east wall of the house has been partially buried beneath a later field wall running north to south, the kind of incremental layering that makes Irish upland landscapes so difficult and so interesting to read. The earlier structure was simply incorporated into a later agricultural boundary, its stones and alignment quietly absorbed into the working landscape around it.
