House – indeterminate date, Noughaval, Co. Clare

A grass-covered rectangle of stone walls, roughly seven metres long and less than three metres wide, sits at the south-western edge of a cluster of old structures near Noughaval in County Clare.

Nobody can say with certainty when it was built or who lived in it. That ambiguity is, in its own quiet way, the most interesting thing about it. The walls survive, the proportions of a domestic interior are still legible on the ground, and two small enclosed areas extend to the west and north, the kind of arrangement that suggests a yard or garden space, though nothing in the record pins down their precise purpose.

What gives the site its context is what surrounds it. About 137 metres to the north-east stands the medieval church of Noughaval, set within a graveyard that has accumulated centuries of use. Roughly the same distance to the east-north-east is a house dated to the sixteenth or seventeenth century, itself part of the same loose settlement cluster. An enclosure of unclear function lies about 139 metres to the south-east. Taken together, these features suggest that this corner of the Burren was occupied, farmed, and organised across a long stretch of time, with the nameless rectangular house forming one quiet node in that pattern. Whether it predates the nearby post-medieval house, overlaps with it, or belongs to an entirely different period remains an open question.
