House - indeterminate date, Rathmore, Co. Longford

House
In the south-west corner of a rath near Rathmore in County Longford, there may once have been a house.
Or there may not. That uncertainty is, in its own quiet way, the whole point.
A rath is a circular earthwork enclosure, typically of early medieval date, built as a defended farmstead and found in enormous numbers across the Irish countryside. Within the one at Rathmore, a report filed in 1976 recorded what appeared to be the outline of a possible house site occupying the south-west quadrant of the enclosure. By the time anyone thought to look more carefully, the outline had already gone. Nothing of it remains visible at ground level today, which places it in a particular category of archaeological curiosity: a feature recorded just precisely late enough to be noted, and just early enough to have vanished before more could be said about it.
